A young Italian man discovers that his grandfather, who had always presented his wartime experiences in a heroic and adventurous light, had in fact been an unwilling and often bewildered participant in the Second World War. Digging into the family history, he uncovers a far more complicated and human story than the legend passed down through generations. The documentary blends archive material with personal testimony to reexamine how ordinary people experienced and later remembered the conflict.
