Poarta Albă

Directed by Nicolae Mărgineanu (2013)

A Romanian man who survived the brutal forced-labour camp at Poarta Albă during the communist era returns to the site decades later, haunted by memories of the suffering he and his fellow prisoners endured. Through a series of flashbacks, the film reconstructs the inhumane conditions, political repression, and broken lives that defined the Danube Canal construction project under the Gheorghiu-Dej regime. The story weaves together the survivor's personal grief with a broader reckoning over historical guilt and the difficulty of bearing witness to atrocities that official memory has long sought to suppress.
