Papusza

Directed by Joanna Kos-Krauze, Krzysztof Krauze (2013)

A Polish biographical film following the life of Bronisława Wajs, known as Papusza, a Romani poet whose remarkable gift for language brought her both recognition and tragedy. Her friendship with writer Jerzy Ficowski, who translated and published her poetry, ultimately led to her being ostracised by her own community, who viewed the exposure of their culture as a betrayal. Shot in striking black and white, the film traces her journey from a nomadic childhood through to the painful isolation of her later years.
