An ageing American colonel travels to Venice, where he reconnects with a young Italian countess with whom he has fallen deeply in love. As he reflects on his past — his military career, his failures, and his regrets — the city itself becomes a backdrop for his quiet reckoning with mortality. Based on Ernest Hemingway's novel, the film is a meditative portrait of a man confronting the end of his life whilst clinging to beauty and feeling.
