All Quiet on the Western Front
Directed by Edward Berger
A young German soldier volunteers enthusiastically for service in the First World War, only to find the reality of trench warfare brutal and dehumanising. As the months drag on, he watches his comrades die one by one and his own idealism is ground down into exhaustion and despair. The film follows his struggle to survive both physically and psychologically, culminating in a tragic irony as the armistice approaches.
