A successful Hollywood screenwriter drifts through the excess and glamour of Los Angeles and Las Vegas, moving between a series of relationships with women whilst struggling to find meaning and authenticity in his hollow existence. The film is structured loosely around tarot arcana, following its protagonist through a series of dreamlike, fragmented encounters that prioritise mood and imagery over conventional narrative. Malick employs his characteristic visual style — handheld cameras, voiceover narration, and natural light — to explore themes of spiritual emptiness, desire, and the search for the soul beneath a life of privilege.
