Gli anni amari

Directed by Andrea Adriatico (2018)

A young gay man in 1930s Italy struggles to live authentically under the repressive shadow of Mussolini's fascist regime. Based on the true story of Aldo Mieli, a pioneering figure in the early homosexual rights movement, the film follows his persecution and forced exile as the state tightens its grip on those deemed morally undesirable. It is both a personal portrait of suffering and a broader meditation on the violence that conformist ideologies inflict upon individual lives.
