Two Jesuit priests travel to 17th-century Japan in search of their mentor, who is rumoured to have renounced his faith under persecution. They find a country where Christianity has been driven underground and its practitioners face brutal oppression at the hands of the authorities. One of the priests is eventually forced to confront a profound crisis of belief when he must choose between his God and the lives of his fellow Christians.
