A Czech bachelor cellist in Prague reluctantly takes on legal guardianship of a young Russian boy he barely knows, initially viewing the child as an unwelcome disruption to his comfortable, independent lifestyle. As the two navigate their language barrier and cultural differences in the waning days of Soviet influence over Czechoslovakia, a genuine bond slowly develops between them. The film charts their growing attachment with warmth and gentle humour, set against the backdrop of political change sweeping through Eastern Europe.
