Minamata
(2019)
An ageing and disillusioned W. Eugene Smith is persuaded to travel to a small Japanese coastal town, where he documents the devastating human toll of mercury poisoning caused by a local chemical company's decades of industrial pollution. His photographs of the afflicted residents, many of them severely disabled from birth, bring the corporate wrongdoing to international attention. The project reignites his sense of purpose and helps spark a wider environmental justice movement.
