A young woman in 18th-century Russia becomes entangled in the violent Pugachev rebellion after her father, a military officer, is stationed at a remote frontier fortress. She falls in love with a young nobleman whose loyalties are tested as the rebel forces sweep across the land. The story follows themes of honour, courage and survival against a backdrop of political upheaval, drawing on Pushkin's classic novel.
