A grumpy and rigidly principled retired man living alone in a Swedish housing community attempts to take his own life following the death of his beloved wife, only to be repeatedly interrupted by the chaos of his neighbours. A lively young family moving in next door gradually draws him back into the world, and as the community comes to rely on him, fragments of his past are revealed through flashbacks. The film is an adaptation of Fredrik Backman's novel, exploring themes of grief, belonging and the unexpected ways human connection can restore a person's will to live.
