A young man from a dysfunctional working-class family unexpectedly becomes a single father after a brief encounter with a woman who turns out to be a serial killer and is subsequently executed. With virtually no parenting experience and little support beyond his eccentric relatives, he attempts to raise his infant daughter whilst navigating dead-end jobs and the chaos of everyday life in a small American town.
