Boogie Nights
Directed by Paul Thomas Anderson (1997)
Set against the backdrop of the American pornographic film industry during the late 1970s and into the 1980s, the story follows a young dishwasher from the San Fernando Valley who is discovered by a veteran adult filmmaker and quickly rises to stardom thanks to his extraordinary physical endowment. As the decade shifts and cocaine and excess take hold, the tight-knit found family assembled around the director begins to fragment under the weight of addiction, violence, and changing tastes in the industry. The film traces both the dizzying ascent and painful decline of its protagonist, exploring themes of ambition, belonging, and the hollowness of fame.
