Casting Overview
‘Mehndi’ is a 3rd year student short film.
Synopsis: An intercultural lesbian couple are on a quest for acceptance. When Nazia is pushed by her fiancée to throw the Mehndi of her mother’s dreams, her living room becomes a battleground for the future mother-in-laws’ clash of cultures. Set in the couple’s house, the day of the celebration has come. Trying to balance the in-laws’ happiness and their own enjoyment soon proves to be a challenge when the mothers make the event all about themselves. The couple and their mothers must find where they fit in a world filled with tradition, culture, religion and modernity.
Shooting in York from 5th -11th February 2022.
It is not paid but expenses will be covered.
Roles
ROLE: Brianna Thompson
Brianna is a Black woman and the epitome of femininity, she is sunshine personified. She’s about to marry the love of her life, Nazia. She loves her mother and her culture and wants Nazia to experience that same joy. She doesn’t fully understand Nazia’s hesitance to embrace what she views as cultural rites of passage and tries to act as the glue to keep a mother and daughter together.
ROLE: Nazia Ali
Nazia is a British South Asian woman jaded by a lifetime of cultural expectations and she’s about to get married to the love of her life. She struggles with her identity and where she fits into the community she was raised in, considering herself to be “culturally Muslim. She has a complicated relationship with her mother, Rasheeda, who she wants to make proud.
ROLE: Patricia Thompson
Patricia is a Black woman who has been through more than her fair share of trials and tribulation, her youth was stolen from her by the age of Enoch Powell. Brimming with empathy, but very direct. Patricia shows her love through empowerment rather than babying and deeply loves Brianna and her soon-to-be daughter-in-law.
ROLE: Rasheeda Ali
Rasheeda is a South Asian woman who grew up in a strict, traditional Muslim family and has struggled with coming to terms with her daughter’s sexuality. While she has the best intentions she can still be overbearing, she only wants the best for her daughter, Nazia, but struggles to understand what the best means for the younger generation.
