A group of Greek women travel by ship to America in the early twentieth century to meet the men they are set to marry, having only exchanged photographs and letters with their prospective husbands. The journey brings together women of different backgrounds and temperaments, and the film follows their hopes, fears and relationships as they cross the Atlantic. One woman's story is intertwined with that of a young American photographer who is documenting the voyage, lending an outsider's perspective to the emigrants' experiences.
