A young Saxon nobleman named Uhtred is captured and raised by Vikings following a raid that kills his father, leaving him torn between his adoptive Danish culture and his birthright of reclaiming the Northumbrian stronghold of Bebbanburg. As the Viking Great Heathen Army pushes further into England, Uhtred finds himself drawn into the service of Alfred, King of Wessex, the last remaining Saxon kingdom. Uhtred must navigate shifting loyalties, battlefield warfare, and political intrigue as Alfred seeks to unite the English against the Norse invaders.
