Two Soviet cosmonauts are sent on a mission to carry out the first spacewalk in history, racing against American rivals during the Cold War space race. When the mission encounters catastrophic technical failures, the crew face life-threatening challenges both outside the spacecraft and upon re-entry. The film follows their struggle for survival as well as the political pressures and personal sacrifices that accompany the Soviet space programme.
