Based on Christine Nöstlinger's autobiographical novel, the film follows her family as they flee the advancing front and struggle to survive amid bombing, occupation and scarcity. The story is told largely through the child's perspective, capturing both the bewilderment and resilience of youth in the face of adult catastrophe.
