A French Jewish woman sheltering in rural France during the German occupation falls into a forbidden romance with the Wehrmacht officer billeted in her home, while her husband remains a prisoner of war. As the German forces prepare to advance eastward, the two struggle to reconcile their feelings against the backdrop of collaboration, resistance, and survival in a divided community. The story is adapted from Irène Némirovsky's unfinished wartime novel, published posthumously decades after her death in Auschwitz.
