A group of Irish-born soldiers serving in the American army during the Mexican-American War desert their posts after facing brutal mistreatment and religious persecution, crossing the border to fight for Mexico instead. Known as the San Patricio Battalion, they are led by Sergeant John Riley, who finds himself torn between loyalty, conscience, and love for a Mexican widow. After fighting valiantly for their adopted cause, the survivors face harsh consequences when captured by American forces following Mexico's defeat.
