Two Czech brothers, Ctirad and Josef Mašín, flee Communist Czechoslovakia in the early 1950s, undertaking a brutal overland journey through East Germany to reach West Berlin and ultimately the United States. Their escape is intercut with flashbacks to their wartime resistance activities and the execution of their father, a celebrated anti-Nazi fighter, which shaped their fierce opposition to totalitarianism. The film portrays both the violence they commit during their flight and the moral complexity of their legacy, which remains deeply contested in Czech society.
