The story weaves together the fates of numerous characters across decades of poverty, revolution and sacrifice, culminating in the ill-fated Paris student uprising of 1832. Notably performed almost entirely through live-recorded singing rather than conventional lip-syncing, the film features an ensemble cast including Hugh Jackman, Russell Crowe and Anne Hathaway.
