A literary scholar travels to Venice hoping to obtain the private letters of a celebrated 19th-century American poet from the elderly woman who once loved him. He insinuates himself into the household by posing as a lodger, forming a calculated friendship with the old woman's younger niece in order to gain access to the coveted documents. As his scheme deepens, the emotional and moral cost of his obsession becomes increasingly difficult to ignore.
