Import/Export

A young Ukrainian woman leaves her infant child behind and travels westward to Austria, hoping to find work and a better life, but ends up in a degrading job caring for elderly nursing home residents. Simultaneously, an unemployed Viennese man drifts eastward into Ukraine alongside his crude stepfather, taking on menial and humiliating work. The two narratives run in parallel without the protagonists ever meeting, tracing the bleakness of economic desperation and the human cost of Europe's stark inequalities.
