A Bavarian woman in the nineteenth century establishes an informal banking scheme, promising ordinary working people extraordinarily high returns on their deposits and winning their devoted trust. As her reputation grows and the money pours in, she lives lavishly and becomes a celebrated local figure. The scheme eventually unravels when the flow of new investors can no longer sustain the payments owed to earlier ones, leading to her arrest and the ruin of thousands of ordinary savers.
