A Jewish man living in a Nazi-occupied Polish ghetto accidentally overhears a radio news broadcast suggesting that Soviet forces are advancing to liberate the area. Unable to reveal how he came by this information without facing execution, he allows his neighbours to believe he secretly owns a forbidden radio, and his small fabrications grow into an elaborate web of hopeful stories that sustain the spirits of those around him, even as the ghetto's grim reality closes in.
