Two young Romanian women who grew up together in an orphanage are reunited when one of them, Alina, travels to the remote Orthodox monastery where her closest friend Voichița has chosen to live as a nun. Alina's desperate wish to persuade Voichița to leave with her and build a life abroad is thwarted by Voichița's deepening religious devotion and the controlling influence of the monastery's priest. As Alina's emotional instability worsens, the community interprets her behaviour as demonic possession, leading to a brutal exorcism ritual with devastating consequences. The film is loosely based on a real incident that shocked Romania in 2005.
