A Jewish tinker named Leopold Hilsner is accused of murdering a young Czech woman in the small Bohemian town of Polná at the turn of the twentieth century, with the case rapidly inflamed by antisemitic hysteria. The young lawyer Tomáš Masaryk risks his career and reputation by publicly challenging the flimsy evidence and the prejudice driving the prosecution. The drama examines how mob sentiment and political manipulation can corrupt the pursuit of justice, drawing parallels to the broader history of antisemitism in Europe.
