Two FBI agents — the methodical Holden Ford and his seasoned partner Bill Tench — establish an early behavioural science unit in the late 1970s, travelling across America to interview imprisoned serial killers in order to understand how such criminals think. Drawing on these disturbing conversations with figures like Ed Kemper and Richard Speck, they develop psychological profiling techniques that begin to be applied to active investigations. The series also follows the personal toll the work takes on both men and their relationships outside the Bureau.
